Jon Halldor Gardarsson is a PGA golf professional who teaches on the courses of Murcia and Alicante, in the south-east of Spain. He is a member of the PGA of Iceland, Germany and Europe, has been teaching golf for thirty years, and lives in Santiago de la Ribera, Murcia.
From Iceland to Germany
He was born in Iceland and spent his childhood in Hafnarfjordur, near the capital, Reykjavik. From a young age he showed ability across several sports — golf, football, handball and basketball — and was a member of several Icelandic national teams, competing in national and international tournaments.
At the age of twenty he was selected as a professional football player to Germany, and studied at the German Sport University — the Deutsche Sporthochschule — in Cologne at the same time. He holds qualifications in physical education and in sports psychology.
Qualifications as a golf instructor
After completing his sports studies in 1990, he trained as a golf instructor at the Paderborner Land Golf Club in Germany.
He is a member of the PGA of Iceland, the PGA of Germany and the PGA of Europe, and holds the German DOSB/DGV C-Trainer and B-Trainer coaching qualifications.
The combination matters in practice: a qualification in sports psychology alongside the coaching badges is why the mental side of the game and course strategy are trained as deliberately as the swing, rather than treated as an afterthought.
Thirty years of teaching
Since 1990 he has worked as a golf teacher at clubs in Germany and Iceland, among them Paderborner Land Club, Königsfeld Golf Club, Lippstadt Golf Club and Keilir in Iceland.
In Germany he founded his own golf school, “Golf Schule Gardarsson”, where he achieved a number of successes with both teams and individual players.
Across those thirty years he has supported and trained golfers of all ages and skill levels, including professional golfers.
Now, in Spain
After a short break from his professional career, Jon Gardarsson returned to coaching on the courses of south-east Spain — the provinces of Murcia and Alicante, on the sunniest stretch of the Mediterranean coast. He lives in Santiago de la Ribera (Murcia).
Lessons are given in German, Icelandic, English and Spanish. The first three are his own working languages rather than a translation arrangement — he is Icelandic, and both played and studied in Germany.
In his own words
“I am passionate about my work as a golf teacher and enjoy it immensely. In addition, I have persuasive skills, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic.”
What he teaches
Private golf lessons for one to four people, covering the four parts of the game: the long game, the short game, the mental side and course strategy. There are also dedicated programmes for women and for children.
Where the lessons take place: Roda Golf and Serena Golf at the Mar Menor, Torre Golf, Hacienda Riquelme and El Valle Golf in Murcia, and La Finca Golf in Alicante.
Alongside the school he runs organised golf trips to Spain for groups of two to four, golf tourism to Iceland for groups of at least four, and assistance with buying property in Murcia and Alicante.
